Australian researchers Phillip Slee, Rosalind Murray-Harvey, and Alison Wotherspoon from Flinders University and Bruce Hendry and staff and students from Unley High School in Adelaid, South Australia produced an educational resource DVD, ‘Coping With School Bulling.’ The audiovisual resource was designed for middle school and high school students. The DVD consists of four short videos with an accompanying leaflet that includes context for the DVD, questions to prompt group discussion, and class activities. The video discusses four types of bullying, viewed together or separately, including: exclusion, verbal, physical, and cyber bullying. Some of the issues raised in the videos include bystander behavior, gender, sex role stereotypes, and retaliation.

Australian filmmaker, Christopher Faull, held a screening at the Mary Riepma Ross Film Theater on Monday, April 7th 2008, of his two anti-bullying films written, produced, and filmed in the United States. “Stories of Us: Bullying,” was developed and performed by eighth grade drama students from Irving Middle School in Lincoln, Nebraska. Lincoln city Mayor Chris Beutler, principal of Irving Middle School Hugh McDermott, several faculty members from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and parents and students of Irving Middle School attended the screening. Associate Professor Susan Swearer (UNL), Professor Dorothy Espelage (UIUC), and Professor Shane Jimerson (UCSB) partnered with Christopher Faull and Randy Ng in writing and developing “Stories of Us: Bullying,” and collaborated in the development of the accompanying text and curriculum materials. The other United States movie was filmed in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois and was also screened at the Ross and in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. Read the rest of this entry »

On March 3rd, 2008, the New York Times best-selling author, Rachel Simmons presented to a captive audience of college students, parents, community members, and interested youth. The title of her talk: “Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls” explored the controversial issues of social, indirect, and relational aggression. Simmons shared personal experiences with being the victim of relational aggression as well as the perpetrator. Nebraska educators experienced a unique presentation by prominent researcher in the field of bullying and peer victimization, Dr. Shelley Hymel, from the University of British Columbia. She presented Moral Disengagement and Bullying to an audience of about 100 educators, researchers and practitioners in Lincoln, Nebraska. The focus of this presentation was to raise awareness about the issue of bullying, and to educate the audience on “how a bully becomes a bully.” Read the rest of this entry »

R.E.S.P.E.C.T.2 stands for Relationship Empowerment for Students, Parents, Educators & Community Through Theatre. It is a not-for-profit organization based out of Omaha, Nebraska. R.E.S.P.E.C.T.2 began in 2000 as an effort to use thatre to unite communities in an effort to prevent violence and build healthy relationships among children and youth. The University of Georgia has formed a Healthy Teens Program specifically to research parental influence, peer issues, academics and dating. They have recently been featured on an online community forum to spread the word of their research to their community. Read the article: Give the Gift of Time to Teens this Christmas.
